What’s in the name: Did you celebrate the name of your business last week?

Thoughts on ‘Celebrate Your Name Week’ by the Seed Group team

Women’s Day steals the limelight across headlines every year on 8th of March. However, very few of us know that the days prior to this international celebration are important ones too. The first week of March is marked as Celebrate Your Name Week (CYNW).

Yes, you read it right. There is a day designated to celebrating names. The celebration was established by an American onomatology hobbyist Jerry Hill in 1997, but somehow our name, and that of our business, doesn’t cross our mind as a thing to be celebrated or talked about. However, we, at Seed Group, strongly feel it should be.

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.” Though literally true, the Shakespearean quote is not much applicable when it comes to naming a business. There is a lot in the name.

Hence, start-ups and small businesses put in as much amount of thought in naming their business as any parents put in naming their child. It is an exercise of great learning and exploring, which often remains unrecognised after the name is finalised. The name goes on to defining your brand, giving it an identity, separating it from other brands, becoming the bridge between your products and your customers and so on. It becomes a part and parcel of the brand’s life.

Naming your brand is an important stage for businesses and there are interesting stories around how and why people have named famous companies. Steve Jobs for example named his brand Apple taking inspiration from his fruitarian diet and because it sounded simple and fun. Rest, as you all know is history. There are brand names that are so influential that we just need the names to bring about their entire business blueprint to our mind. That is the power of a name.

The name of your brand is what people hear first when they know your business and that is why it is important to pay as much attention to it as you pay to any other aspect of your business.

In short, your brand name is your story and there is a week every year that is dedicated to celebrating names. So, why not make it a habit to cherish the facet of your business that plays such an important part in making your business what it is today and what it aspires to be in the future.

Celebrate your business – rejoice the name that defines it!
